Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. The 32nd annual East Kentucky Leadership Conference will be held April 25-26. On Thursday, the conference will be held at the Benham School House Inn in Benham, and on Friday, it will be held at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College’s Cumberland campus. APRIL 26

HCHS Football 2019 “Spring Showcase” will beheld from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on April 26 at Coal Miners’ Memorial Stadium. Admission is free for everyone. Players will be introduced, have a live practice and small game format for fans to watch as well has debut the HYPE video on the Jumbotron.

The Harlan County Public Library and Dream Furniture will present the third trivia night will at 7 p.m. on April 26 at the Harlan Yoga Studio, located on Main Street in downtown Harlan. Join in as Tri-County Trivia challenges everyone to general trivia. Bring your team or come as an individual and organizers will find your team. Entry is free and food is provided by Dream Furniture. There will be a $200 grand prize. Come a little early to sign up.

APRIL 26, 27

Harlan Christian Church will host the 16th annual Men’s Fish Fry beginning at 6 p.m. on April 27. All men are invited to attend. Special music will be presented by the men from Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, and featured guests will be Tommy and John Thomas Oaks. The Oaks’ will also present a musical based on the life of Jonah, “A Whale of a Tale” at 6:30 p.m. on April 26 at Harlan Christian Church. Everyone is invited to attend.

The Benham Theater will be showing “Mine 9” at 7 p.m. nightly April 19-26. Tickets are $3 per person and concessions will be available.

APRIL 27

Boy Scout Troop 149 of Harlan will conduct a flag retirement ceremony beginning at 1:30 p.m. on April 27 near the lake at Camp Blanton. The ceremony is free and open to the public. All area veterans are encouraged to attend. Bring a lawn chair.

The annual Harlan County 100 Man March Against Domestic Violence will begin at 1 p.m. on April 27 in the Harlan Center parking lot. There will be refreshments and door prizes for walkers and supporters. Participants will need to arrive at the parking lot by 12:45 p.m. Pre-Registration is not required. Join the City of Evarts Tourism Commission and the Harlan County Ridge Runners for their annual Ramp Festival on April 27. The off-road ride for free guided tours will leave the North Evarts RV Park between 9:30-10 a.m. The event asks that you be there at 9 a.m. if you would like to participate. The food for the festival will be served from 4:30 to 5 p.m. There’s no charge per meal, but donations are expected. For more information, call Evarts City Hall at 606-837-2477

The Raven Rock Spring 5K Trail Run/Hike at Kingdom Come State Park has been postponed until April 27 due to inclement weather. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the race at 10 a.m. Registration fee for the run/hike, $20; kids race, $8. T-shirts are first come, first served for on-site registration. If you are concerned about the future of young children in the community and the neglect or abuse they may suffer and/or frustrated about the impact that poverty, drugs and incarceration are having on families, Living Hope Church and Eastern Kentucky Child Care Coalition will host trainings/informative sessions available to the public free of charge. Benham Schoolhouse Inn will donate all proceeds from this week’s all-you-can-eat Sunday Supper to aid the Howard family as they morn the loss of their two children from a tragic house fire and recover from their own life-threatening injuries. The Harlan County Community Scholarship Banquet will be held April 29 at the Harlan Center. Anyone wishing to give a scholarship at the banquet should have selections completed by April 23 for recipient information to be included in the event program. As part of Harlan County’s Bicentennial celebration this year, the Harlan County Arts Council is hosting Wild Pine Mountain: A Primitive Lands Of Harlan County Lecture Series on May 4 at the Harlan County Shrine Ground and Conference Building. Lectures will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. This free community enrichment programming is intended to educate people about Harlan County’s more primitive past and natural history. There will be activities for children throughout the day, including face painting, arts and crafts, storytelling and moments with Smokey the Bear. Shriners will be selling concessions all day. There will also be a “get-to-know-one-another” bonfire by the river beginning at 6 p.m. on May 3 on the Shriners grounds. The annual Love My Public Schools 5K Scholarship Race for Harlan County students will be held May 6 at James A. Cawood Elementary School. Registration will begin at 5 p.m., and the race at 6 p.m. Those who register early will be guaranteed choice of T-shirt size. Proceeds will benefit scholarships for Harlan County High School students from the Harlan County Education Association. Several age divisions will offer competition opportunities for everyone, with gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded in these categories: under 13, teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, over 60 and special recognition. Registration is $25 and includes a T-shirt, water bottle and refreshments. The Harlan County Walking Club meets from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday at the Harlan County High School indoor track. The sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church, 306 E. Clover Street, Harlan, will be open each Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for prayer and meditation. Anyone seeking a quiet space to spend time with the Lord is welcome.

Southeast Golf Scramble for Students will be held May 10 at the Middlesboro Country Club, hosted by the Southeast Education Foundation. A four-player scramble, the event entry fee is $300 per team, including green fees, use of cart, event T-shirt and lunch. Golfers may choose tee times at 8 a.m. or 1 p.m. Registration for each will be at 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., Space is limited to 18 teams— nine per flight—and slots will fill quickly. The Tour De Kingdom Come Bicycle Rally will be held May 18. Registration will be at the park gift shop at 9 a.m. The race starts at 10 a.m. Registration fee is $25. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Harlan, Bell, Whitley and Knox counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
