Bears, Dragons split JV doubleheader

Harlan County and Harlan split a junior varsity doubleheader on Monday with the Bears winning 11-2 in the opener and the Dragons claiming a 10-6 victory in the nightcap.

Eighth-grader Tristan Cooper pitched a one-hitter in the opener, striking out eight while walking three.

Brayden Blakley, Cooper and Logan Blanton each had two singles for the Bears. Zack Collett added a double. Jacob Brown, Karsten Dixon and Brayden Burton contributed one single each.

Evan Browning had a single for the Dragons.

John Mark Bryson gave up nine runs in 3 2/3 innings, with five strikeouts and two walks. Shane Lindsey recorded the final out.

Jeremiah Mills led the Dragons in the second game with two hits. Bryson and Browning added one hit each.

Lindsey pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits while striking out four and walking seven.

Collett led the Bears with three hits. Josh Swanner added two hits. Nathan Shepherd, Brown and Dixon added one hit each.

Shepherd, Dixon, Burton, Blakley and Swanner shared mound duty.

Montanaro, West lead Harlan to win

Donovan Montanaro and Tristan West teamed to drive in seven runs as Harlan defeated Jenkins 14-10 in middle school baseball action.

Montanaro drove in four runs and scored three as he collected a triple and single. West added a triple and scored three runs. Jared Moore drove in two runs with a double. Will Cassim added two RBI with a single.

Jared Moore struck out two and walked none in 3 1/3 innings on the mound to earn the win. West recorded the final five outs.

New Harlan coasts to victory over Bell

New Harlan claimed an 11-6 win over Bell County on Tuesday.

Daven Johnson, Colby Johnson, Isaac Kelly and Carter Howard had one single each for the Patriots.

Howard allowed one run in one inning. Daven Johnson gave up three runs in 2 1/3 innings, with four strikeouts. Colby Johnson allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings, with five strikeouts.

Letcher rallies for win over Cumberland

Letcher scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally for a 10-9 win over Cumberland in middle school baseball action.

Shawn Carroll led the Redskins with a double and a single and four runs scored. Patrick Mandrell, Nazareth Sanchez and Liam Garland added one single each.

Alex Creech struck out one and walked two in 2 1/3 innings on the mound. Garland struck out one and walked tow in one inning. Carroll struck out one and walked two in one inning.

Williams led Letcher with a double and three singles. Hall had two singles.
