Scholarship race set for May 6 at JACES
Runners and walkers of all ages are encouraged to register early for the Annual Love My Public Schools 5K Scholarship Race set for May 6 at James A. Cawood Elementary School.
Those who register early will be guaranteed their choice of T-shirt size. Proceeds from the race will benefit scholarships for Harlan County High School students from the Harlan County Education Association.
Registration will begin at 5 p.m. at James A. Cawood Elementary School. The race begins at 6 p.m. Several age divisions will offer competition opportunities for everyone with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded in these categories: under 13, teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, over 60 and special recognition.
Registration is $25 and includes a T-shirt, water bottle and refreshments. To register for the event, go to https://hcea19.eventbrite.com or click the link on the “Harlan County Education Association” Facebook page.
The Harlan County Education Association is a local chapter of the Kentucky Education Association.

Jordan, Henson lead Patriots past Lee
New Harlan claimed a pair of wins over Lee, Va., in middle school baseball action, winning 3-1 on April 9 and 18-3 on April 12.
Samuel Henson pitched a a one-hitter in the April 9 game, striking out nine and walking six.
Daven Johnson led the Patriots on offense with two singles. Isaac Kelly and Chuckie Blackshire added one single each.
Thomas Jordan pitched a no-hitter in the April 12 three-inning game. He struck out three and walked seven.
Henson led the Patriots at the plate with a double and single. Jordan had a triple. Kelly, Jayden Sutton, Colby Johnson, Blackshire, Carter Howard and Daven Johnson each added one single.

Rogers’ 1-hitter sends Lady Skins to win
Katelyn Rogers pitched a one-hitter with three strikeouts and eight walks as Cumberland defeated visiting Knox Central 7-3 in middle school softball action Thursday.
Halle Raleigh led the Lady Skins on offense with two doubles and a single. Rogers had two singles. Alexis Sergent, Kayle Duckworth, Lola Maggard and Harley Keith contributed one single each.
Beller had a single for Knox Central and also pitched.
