Two fires occurred early last night in Harlan County, one resulting in the death of an animal.

The firefighters were able to contain the blaze in the center portion of the house, but the building received heavy damage during the fire.

Everyone inside the house, including a dog, were able to escape without injury. A cat was the only reported death as a result of the fire.

The family involved is receiving aid from the Red Cross, which provides assistance to those in need after emergencies, such as a fire. Members of the Cumberland, Lynch and Benham fire departments responded to the fire and were able to extinguish it.

The fire remains under investigation.

An additional fire in Cumberland is also under investigation after a fire destroyed a house and caused minor damage to another close by.

Cumberland Fire Department firefighters responded to the call on Monday night when a home on Cannon House Court caught fire.

When they arrived at the scene, the home was engulfed in flames and the fire department said it “was a loss.” The fire also damaged another nearby home before firefighters were able to control the blaze. The other home only received minor damage.

No one was injured in the incident, but the fire is still under investigation by the fire department.
