Carroll’s 1-hitter sends Skins to victory

Shawn Carroll pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts and three walks as Cumberland rolled past Bell County 14-1 in four innings in middle school baseball action.

Patrick Mandrell and Carroll led Cumberland at the plate with two singles each. Nazareth Sanchez had a double. Liam Garland, Jesse Franks and Kaden Boggs added one single each.

Ingram had the only hit for Bell.

The Redskins fell 22-8 to Pineville.

Mandrell and Tyler Lunsford each had two singles for Cumberland. Carroll, Sanchez and Steven Childers added one single each.

Lunsford, Creech, Mandrell and Sanchez shared mound duty.

Cumberland edged Letcher 6-5 as Sanchez scored the winning run after walking, stealing second and coming home on a hit by Carroll.

Mandrell and Carroll each had two singles for the Redskins. Christian Maggard and Creech added one each.

Garland struck out five and walked two in three innings. Carroll struck out six and walked two in three innings.

Maggard powers Lady Patriots to win

Led by Rylie Maggard with a double and two singles, New Harlan defeated Cumberland 13-8 in middle school softball action.

Hailey Austin added a pair of singles for the Lady Patriots. Leah Davis and Haylee Mabes contributed one single each.

Maggard earned the win on the mound as she struck out five and walked three.

Kera Collins led Cumberland with a double and single. Kayle Duckworth singled twice. Katelyn Rogers had a triple. Alex Sergent added a single.

New Harlan fell 12-4 to Pineville. Maggard, Abby Fields, Olivia Peterson and Haylee Mabes added one single each.

Maggard struck out three and walked eight.

Knox Central edged the Lady Patriots 11-10. Maggard struck out six and walked seven and had the team’s only hit with a single.

New Harlan suffered a 19-17 loss to Lynn Camp. Austin led the Lady Patriots with three doubles. Maggard had a triple and single. Davis, Lindsey Skidmore and Rhileigh Estes added two singles each. Peterson had a double. Ashton Evans, Mabes and Fields added one single each.
