The Harlan Enterprise will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to beth.key@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1512 Hwy. 421 South, Harlan. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. FEB. 23

Pine Mountain Settlement School will kick off the gardening season with the annual seed swap from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 23 in Laurel House (lunch is provided for free at noon). Heirloom seed expert Bill Best will be on hand. Many rare local bean and tomato varieties will be available for purchase and be sure to bring your own heirloom seeds to sell or trade. The 2019 Miss Southeast Pageant will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 23 at the Black Box Theater-Godbey Appalachian Center on the Cumberland campus. The winner will receive a $1,000 tuition scholarship for one semester and will represent Southeast at this year’s Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival in May. The Harlan County Walking Club meets from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday at the Harlan County High School indoor track. Free and open to the public year round, all ages are welcome to walk, jog or run at their own pace. Participants may enter at the top left gym entrance (four brick columns facing U.S. 119). The sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church, 306 E. Clover Street, Harlan, will be open each Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for prayer and meditation. Anyone seeking a quiet space to spend time with the Lord is welcome.

Enjoy a story as Ms. Elizabeth presents captivating stories and fun crafts each Thursday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Harlan County Public Library. Children of all ages are welcome.

Bloodroot, a literary magazine of Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College, is seeking submissions and contest entries from Appalachian writers in short fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and art. Considerations include one short story of up to five pages, one creative nonfiction piece up to five pages, or up to five poems. Submission deadline is March 1. Prizes include $50 for each category. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will hold a Hunter Education Course beginning at 9 a.m. on March 2 at the Harlan County Extension Depot, 110 River Street in Harlan. The hunter must attend the session and pass an exam to be certified. All hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1975 must complete this course. The hunter must be at least 9 years old to be certified. All participants must register for the course at www.fw.ky.gov. Expert herbalist Melissa Calhoun will present “Value Added Herbal Products” from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on March 7 at Pine Mountain Settlement School. Participants will learn about simple herbal products that can be manufactured in the new community commercial kitchen from high-value herbs such as goldenseal and bloodroot. Harlan County Friends of the Shelter will sponsor a trap and release spay/neuter clinic for community and feral cats on March 16. Space is limited. For more information, contact the Harlan Animal Shelter at 606-573-8867.

The Love it, Don’t Trash it community clean-up will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on March 16, sponsored by #Withlovefromharlan. Participants will meet at the upper level of the Harlan Center. No tools or supplies are needed as they will be provided, including safety vests, brooms, dustpans, trash bags and gloves.

Pine Mountain Settlement School will host “Soil Health” from 5 to 6 p.m. on March 19. Learn how to test your soil to determine what nutrients are missing and discuss how to best use cover crops, composting, animal manures and other fertilizers to ensure a bountiful harvest. The third annual Kingdom Come State Park Miniature Golf Tournament will be held on April 5. Registration is from 5 to 5:45 p.m. and the tournament starts at 6 p.m. Ages 5 and up are welcome to compete with individual and couples categories. Awards will be given to first place winners. Traditional Beekeeping will be hosted by Pine Mountain Settlement School from 5 to 6 p.m. on April 11. Local beekeeper and traditional skills expert Gary Branson will demonstrate how to build and use hollow-log style beehives. You will also learn what you need to know about selling honey and other honey-based, value-added products to the public as well. APRIL 13

The annual Harlan County Run With Color 5K will be held on April 13 beginning at 9 a.m. This 5K takes place in the heart of downtown and runners will pass through six stations where they will be covered in color powder and liquid. Antiques, Arts & Crafts in the Crater will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 13 in the Middlesboro City Parking Lot, presented by Middlesboro Main Street, Bell County Tourism, Southern Girls Events and the Bell County Chamber of Commerce.

Pine Mountain Settlement School will host Wildflower Weekend April 19-21. Pine Mountain has more than 100 species of wildflowers viewable through guided walks. The Raven Rock Spring 5K Trail Run/Hike at Kingdom Come State Park will be held April 20. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the race at 10 a.m. Registration fee for the run/hike, $20; kids race, $8. The Harlan County Community Scholarship Banquet will be held April 29 at the Harlan Center. The Tour De Kingdom Come Bicycle Rally will be held May 18. Registration will be at the park gift shop at 9 a.m. The race starts at 10 a.m. Registration fee is $25. Pre-register before May 14 to guarantee a T-shirt at BikeReg.com. Awards for each age division. Fastest male and female will receive special awards. Every rider that finishes the final climb in under 17 minutes will earn a special polka dot T-shirt. The 36-mile race begins and ends at the Kingdom Come State Park lake. The Southeast Community College Choir spring term rehearsals have begun. Director Ryland Pope invites all who love to sing, to join in learning beautiful music to welcome the season. The choir is mainly adults, but serious high school and college students are welcome to join. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Harlan, Bell, Whitley and Knox counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
