Bears overcome defensive woes to defeat Cordia

There was good news and some bad for Harlan County fans who watched the Bears’ 92-72 win over visiting Cordia on Senior Night at HCHS on Tuesday.
The Harlan County offense was good as senior guard Alex Pace hit 10 of 18 shots, including five 3-pointers, in a 33-point performance. Sophomore guard Tyler Cole added 20 points. Jacob Wilson, playing his first home since returning from a knee injury suffered in football, tossed in 11. Taylor Spurlock added 10.
Defense was another story for the Bears, who watched several of the quick Cordia guards dribble around and past them in scoring 48 points in the second half. Harlan County built a 20-point lead midway through the third quarter only to watch the Lions cut it to eight in a two-minute span.
“It’s been a while since we’ve scored 92, but I can’t be happy with giving up that many,” Harlan County coach Michael Jones said. “They are quick though and do a good job off the dribble. We knew they would be hard to keep in front of us. We still have some things we need to improve on and we still have some time to get it fixed.”
Cordia (7-21) was led by junior guard Darryn Pringle with 29 points. Anthony Hidalgo came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers in the third-quarter run and finished with 11 points.
Harlan County (19-6) will close its regular season schedule Friday at home against Whitley County.
