The Harlan Enterprise will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to beth.key@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1512 Hwy. 421 South, Harlan. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. Announcements are also available at harlanenterprise.net.
FEB. 2
The Harlan Center’s Winter Mountain Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 2. There will also be food trucks set up for the day.
There will be a benefit movie night beginning at 1 p.m. on Feb. 2 at the Pineville Theater to help raise money for Gunnar Simpson, who has Trisomy 18/Kleinfilters, to go to NAPA (intensive therapy in Boston). Tickets to the movie “Wonder” are $6 and include one small drink and popcorn. There will also be a silent auction.

The Harlan County High School Color Guard informational meeting has been rescheduled to Feb. 4, at 4 p.m. in the piano lab (room 150). Practice will begin at this time as well. The Carson Black Lung Center in Pineville is inviting coal miners and survivors to a Black Lung Benefits Outreach from 2-6 p.m. on Feb. 7 at Pineville Community Hospital in the cafeteria. The Harlan County Walking Club meets from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday at the Harlan County High School indoor track. Benham Schoolhouse Inn will present Midnight at the Masquerade, a murder mystery experience, beginning at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9 — designed for adults, but family-friendly with a PG-13 rating. Entries are being accepted for the 2019 Miss Southeast Pageant. The deadline is Feb 11 and applications may be picked up at any SKCTC campus. The winner will receive $1,000 tuition scholarship for one semester and will represent Southeast at this year’s Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival in May. The pageant will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 23 in the Black Box Theater-Godbey Appalachian Center on the Cumberland campus. Brian Bowman, a veterans benefits field representative, will be in Harlan County from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (by appointment only) on Feb. 12 at the Harlan County Courthouse. Veterans and their dependents will receive assistance filing for federal and state benefits. This service is provided free of charge by the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs. The seventh annual Chamber Chocolate Craze, a chocolate sampling event, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 12 at Middlesboro Mall, sponsored by the Bell County Chamber of Commerce.
The Cumberland Valley Chapter of the Kentucky Public Retirees (KPR) will meet Feb. 12 at David’s Steak House in Corbin. Mealtime will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the meeting to follow. The guest speaker will be Brian Towles, medical services specialist for Kentucky Retirement Systems. The Harlan County Board of Education’s regular meeting schedule for 2019 has been announced. Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. with the exception of February. The February meeting will be held on the third Tuesday at HCHS at 6:30 p.m. Dates include: Feb. 19, March 21, April 18, May 16, June 20, July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 21 and Dec. 19.

Bloodroot, a literary magazine of Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College, is seeking submissions and contest entries from Appalachian writers in short fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and art. Considerations include one short story of up to five pages in length, one creative nonfiction piece up to five pages in length, or up to five poems. Submission deadline is March 1. The Love it, Don’t Trash it community clean-up will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on March 16, sponsored by #Withlovefromharlan. Participants will meet at the upper level of the Harlan Center. No tools or supplies are needed as they will be provided, including safety vests, brooms, dustpans, trash bags and gloves.
APRIL 5
The third annual Kingdom Come State Park Miniature Golf Tournament will be held on April 5. Registration is from 5 to 5:45 p.m. and the tournament starts at 6 p.m. Ages 5 and up are welcome to compete with individual and couples categories. Awards will be given to first place winners. The annual Harlan County Run With Color 5K will be held on April 13 beginning at 9 a.m. This 5K takes place in the heart of downtown and runners will pass through six stations where they will be covered in color powder and liquid. The Raven Rock Spring 5K Trail Run/Hike at Kingdom Come State Park will be held April 20. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the race at 10 a.m. Registration fee for the run/hike, $20; kids race, $8. The Southeast Community College Choir spring term rehearsals have begun. Director Ryland Pope invites all who love to sing, to join in learning beautiful music to welcome the season. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
