The Harlan Enterprise will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to beth.key@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1512 Hwy. 421 South, Harlan. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. Beginning Jan. 24, the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church, 306 E. Clover Street, Harlan, will be open each Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for prayer and meditation. Anyone seeking a quiet space to spend time with the Lord is welcome.

JAN. 25

The Harlan County Fifth- and Sixth-Grade Cheerleading Competition will be held on Jan. 25 at the Harlan County High School gymnasium. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the competition begins at 6:30 p.m. Squads from Cumberland, Rosspoint and Wallins will be competing. Admission is $3. Trophies will be presented.

Enjoy a story as Ms. Elizabeth presents captivating stories and fun crafts each Thursday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Harlan County Public Library. Children of all ages are welcome.

JAN. 25-27

Pine Mountain State Resort Park will present the annual Winter Photography Weekend Jan. 25-27 with evening programs by guest professional Paul Hassell. New this year is the Cell Phone Class. Tthis can be a stand-alone entry (entering four images like the other traditional three classes) or as an additional image if you are entering in another class (entering your four normal images, then one extra in the phone class). The Harlan County Walking Club meets from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday at the Harlan County High School indoor track. Free and open to the public year round, all ages are welcome to walk, jog or run at their own pace. Participants may enter at the top left gym entrance (four brick columns facing U.S. 119). The Harlan Center’s Winter Mountain Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 2. There will also be food trucks set up for the day. If you want to sell at this flea market/yard sale/crafting jamboree, contact the center at 606-573-4495 and reserve your spot. You must have your spot reserved by Jan. 31 or until space runs out. Set up is $10.

JAN. 31; APRIL 13

The annual Harlan County Run With Color 5K will be held on April 13 beginning at 9 a.m. This 5K takes place in the heart of downtown and runners pass through six stations where they are covered in color power and liquid. Anyone who registers by April 1 is guaranteed a T-shirt. A discount is offered to those registering by Jan. 31. Register online (https://bit.ly/2RLy2v3) or stop by the Harlan Center.

FEB. 1

The Harlan County Public Library will sponsor the first Trivia Night from 7 to 9 p.m. on Feb 1 at Harlan Yoga Studio & Events, hosted by Tri-County Trivia and Harlan Yoga.

FEB. 2

There will be a benefit movie night beginning at 1 p.m. on Feb. 2 at the Pineville Theater to help raise money for Gunnar Simpson, who has Trisomy 18/Kleinfilters, to go to NAPA (intensive therapy in Boston). Tickets to the movie “Wonder” are $6 and include one small drink and popcorn. There will also be a silent auction.

FEB. 9

Benham Schoolhouse Inn will present Midnight at the Masquerade, a murder mystery experience, beginning at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9 — designed for adults, but family-friendly with a PG-13 rating. Doors open at 6 p.m., and all guests should arrive by 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person (reservations required) and include dinner, murder mystery show, after party, dance with Kudzu Killers and Late Night Love & Marriage Game Show. The seventh annual Chamber Chocolate Craze, a chocolate sampling event, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 12 at Middlesboro Mall, sponsored by the Bell County Chamber of Commerce.

The Harlan County Board of Education’s regular meeting schedule for 2019 has been announced. Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. with the exception of February. The February meeting will be held on the third Tuesday at HCHS at 6:30 p.m. Dates include: Feb. 19, March 21, April 18, May 16, June 20, July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 21 and Dec. 19.

FEB. 23

Pine Mountain Settlement School will kick off the gardening season with the annual seed swap from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. on Feb. 23 in Laurel House (lunch is provided for free at noon). Heirloom seed expert Bill Best will be on hand. Many rare local bean and tomato varieties will be available for purchase and be sure to bring your own heirloom seeds to sell or trade. The Love it, Don’t Trash it community clean-up will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on March 16, sponsored by #Withlovefromharlan. Participants will meet at the upper level of the Harlan Center. Come as you are, no tools or supplies are needed as they will be provided, including safety vests, brooms, dustpans, trash bags and gloves.

APRIL 5

The third annual Kingdom Come State Park Miniature Golf Tournament will be held on April 5. Registration is from 5 to 5:45 p.m. and the tournament starts at 6 p.m. Ages 5 and up are welcome to compete with individual and couples categories. Awards will be given to first place winners. Antiques, Arts & Crafts in the Crater will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 13 in the Middlesboro City Parking Lot, presented by Middlesboro Main Street, Bell County Tourism, Southern Girls Events and the Bell County Chamber of Commerce.

APRIL 20

The Raven Rock Spring 5K Trail Run/Hike at Kingdom Come State Park will be held April 20. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the race at 10 a.m. Registration fee for the run/hike, $20; kids race, $8. The Tour De Kingdom Come Bicycle Rally will be held May 18. Registration will be at the park gift shop at 9 a.m. The race starts at 10 a.m. Registration fee is $25. Pre-register before May 14 to guarantee a T-shirt at BikeReg.com. Awards for each age division. Fastest male and female will receive special awards. Every rider that finishes the final climb in under 17 minutes will earn a special polka dot T-shirt. The 36-mile race begins and ends at the Kingdom Come State Park lake. The Southeast Community College Choir spring term rehearsals have begun. Director Ryland Pope invites all who love to sing, to join in learning beautiful music to welcome the season. The choir is mainly adults, but serious high school and college students are welcome to join. The SECC Choir is a college class, and credits through Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College may be obtained by registering through the college system. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. Volunteers and friendly visitors are needed for the Kentucky Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program to enrich the lives of seniors in their long-term care facilities. A military support group for all active, separated or any former military men or women meets at 6:30 p.m. every first and third Monday of the month at the Middlesboro National Guard Armory, located on 30th Street.
