Lady Dragons pull away for win over Jenkins

Up by two heading into the final quarter on Tuesday, Harlan needed to hit its free throws in order to hang on for a win over visiting Jenkins on Tuesday. The Lady Dragons hit 10 of 14 at the line to defeat visiting Jenkins 61-51.

The game was tied at 44 before Harlan scored 15 straight points to put the game out of reach.

“We came out and played one good quarter, the fourth quarter,” said Harlan coach Tiffany Hamm. “We just had better free throw shooting and effort in the second second half.”

Senior guard Payeton Charles powered Harlan with 15 points. Junior forward Natalee King followed with 14 points and Savanna Smith, a senior guard, added 12.

Sophomore guard Kristin Thacker led all scorers with 21 points. Jerrica Thacker, also a sophomore guard, scored 13 for the 5-13 Lady Cavaliers.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first quarter as Harlan took a 13-10 advantage.

Jenkins opened the second period with a 6-1 run to go up by two. A pair of baskets by Raegan Jones gave the Lady Dragons a 21-18 edge. The teams traded baskets and free throws.

A 3-pointer by Smith and two free throws by Angel Wynn gave Harlan a 30-24 halftime advantage.

The Lady Cavaliers outscored Harlan 18-14 in the third quarter behind seven points from Jerrica Thacker and six from Kristin Thacker.

Charles scored three baskets in the third quarter.

“I just felt like we didn’t played really well offensively,” said Hamm. “I felt like that carried over to the other end more so than in the past games.

“We’ve not won a lot, but I’ve said we’ve played with good energy, we’ve played with good effort, played defense and rebounded. I felt like that first half, the offensive struggles were so bad they let it bring the energy and effort down, and I was not pleased with that.”

Harlan (6-15) returns to action Friday at Pineville. Jenkins plays host to Eastside, Va.
