Authorities investigating explosive device found in Evarts

An investigation into the discovery of an improvised explosive device (IED) is being conducted by the Kentucky State Police after one was found Tuesday in Harlan County.

Around 11 a.m. Tuesday, a man was near the sewage plant in Evarts when he noticed something that appeared to be a bomb.

A maintenance worker was notified and then the police were alerted. Kentucky State Police and the Hazardous Device Team responded to the scene.

According to reports, the device was an IED, and a bomb unit safely detonated it.

Police have not said where the IED came from or if charges will be filed.
