Tom Pope, the former teacher from Harlan County, was narrowly defeated in Tuesday’s election for the position of state representative for the 84th district.
With more than 14,000 people voting in both Perry and Harlan County for the position, Pope received 44% of the vote. Incumbent State Representative Chris Fugate got 56% of the vote and maintained his seat.
Pope ran his campaign on strengthening the state’s pension system and boosting education in our region.
“Congratulations to Chris Fugate,” Pope said after the results were announced. “Thank you to all who have worked so hard and given so much to my campaign. I have no regrets and we’ve given our all. I have made some wonderful new friends, and I will be there for you when you have a need. I do hope our message of concern four our state pensions will not be lost. I will continue to be here to help in any way I can.”
“I was very pleased with those that voted for me. First thing I would like to do is thank Chris for running a clean and positive campaign. I think we both agreed right up front that we would do that.”
Pope also wanted to thank House Minority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins for his support during the campaign.
