Top seeds advance in county tourney

The top two seeds advanced in the semifinals of the county fifth- and sixth-grade tournament on Tuesday at James A. Cawood. Top-seeded Evarts will play second-seeded Cawood in the finals on Thursday at 7 p.m. after semifinal victories.

Evarts stayed perfect against county competition and moved to 19-1 overall with a 45-20 win over Rosspoint in the opening game. Kylie Noe, a star of last year’s championship team at Cawood, poured in 33 points to lead Evarts.

Brianna Howard led Rosspoint with nine points.

Noe scored 13 of her team’s 15 points in the first quarter, but Rosspoint stayed within striking distance at 15-7 as Howard had two baskets. Evarts extended its lead to 34-11 by halftime as Noe scored 16 of the Lady Cats’ 19 points in the period.

Evarts outscored Rosspoint 10-7 in the third quarter to stretch its advantage to 44-18 going into the final period. Noe and Ashley Preston each scored four points in the period. Howard led Rosspoint with two baskets in the period.

Cawood had a tougher time in the nightcap, holding off a late comeback attempt to edge James A. Cawood 38-35

Center Abbi Fields and guard Cheyanne Rhymer scored all of the Lady Comets’ points with 20 and 18, respectively.

Leah Davis paced the Trojanettes with 21 points. Madison Daniels chipped in with 10 points.

Davis hit a couple of early shots as JACES grabbed an early lead before Fields brought Cawood back with six points to tie the game at 8-8 after one period.

Fields dominated the second period with 12 points as the Lady Comets extended their lead to 24-11.

Cawood battled back in the second half, cutting the deficit to 31-24 by the end of the third period behind Davis and Daniels. The Lady Comets held Fields to two points in the second half by double teaming her around the basket.

The Lady Comets got as close as five on two occasions late in the game, but Rhymer answered each time with baskets. Davis hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the final deficit to three.

Rosspoint will play James A. Cawood at 5:30 on Thursday for third place. The championship game will follow.

Top-seeded Evarts coasted to a 32-4 win over Green Hills In the opening game as Kylie Noe scored 10 points and Ashley Preston added eight for the Lady Cats.

Rosspoint edged Black Mountain 31-28 in overtime in the second game.

Mallory Long poured in 18 points to lead the Lady Cats

Chelsey Cottrell paced Black Mountain with 18 points.

Leah Davis scored 16 points as James A. Cawood rolled past Wallins 36-11.

Whitley Teague led the Lady Devils with five points.

Cawood broke open a close game with 15 unanswered points on the way to a 34-13 win over Cumberland in the nightcap.

Jade Burton paced Cumberland with six points.

Evarts will play Rosspoint at 5:30 p.m. and James A. Cawood will take on Cawood at 7 p.m. in the semifinals on Tuesday. The consolation and championship games are scheduled for Thursday.
