Party change deadline

The deadline to change party affiliation for the primary election in May is coming up at the end of the month. Harlan County Clerk Donna Hoskins explained the process for changing.

“The last day to change your party and be able to vote in the 2018 election will be Dec. 31,” Hoskins said. “However, Dec. 31 is a Sunday, and the office will be closed. So, the last day I can accept a change in the office is at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 28.”

According to Hoskins, party affiliation is changed with a voter registration form, which can be picked up at the Harlan County Clerk’s Office. You may also complete the task online at the Kentucky Secretary of State’s website at https://vrsws.sos.ky.gov/ovrweb/govoteky

“You can put your voter registration card in the mail, and as long as it’s postmarked by Dec. 31 I can accept them,” Hoskins said. “Those are the only ways I can accept them, hand-delivered to me by 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 28 or postmarked by Dec. 31.”

Hoskins mentioned the primary election is set for May 22.

Hoskins said voters registered as independent are not allowed to vote in the primary unless a candidate is running as an independent. No independent candidates have filed to run at this time.

According to a previous report, all county offices will be on the ballot in all Kentucky counties this election cycle.

Hoskins said potential candidates still have time to file their paperwork to be put on the ballot.

‘We’ve got all the county offices from constable to judge-executive,” Hoskins said. “That includes sheriff, county clerk, magistrates, property valuation administrator, jailer, circuit clerk, county attorney, commonwealth’s attorney, district judge and all other county offices.”

The deadline to file as a candidate is 4 p.m. on Jan. 30.
