Kentucky State Police released additional details concerning an officer involved shooting earlier this week in Knott County.

According to a press release, Zachery Tyler Caudill, 26, of Pippa Passes, was shot by police officers after a vehicle pursuit that spanned two counties. Kentucky State Police Trooper Branden Watts attempted a traffic stop on a Ford pick-up after observing it backing out onto KY 15 and nearly colliding with oncoming traffic. The truck was later reported stolen from a residence. The driver of the truck refused to stop, and fled before finally stopping on an old coal mine haul road in the Raven community of Knott County. Officers advise that Caudill exited the truck and ignored their commands for him to show his hands and get on the ground. They further advised that he made an aggressive movement toward his waistband, as if to retrieve a weapon, at which time they fired their issued firearms, striking him once in the leg.

Police said Watts and Officer Kalin Caudill have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for officers involved in this type of incident. Both officers have been with KSP for one year. Investigators are awaiting the release of Caudill from the Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital in order to lodge him in the Kentucky River Regional Jail for offenses committed during this incident. Charges include theft by unlawful taking, first-degree fleeing or evading police, menacing and resisting arrest. Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
