Favorites move on in county tournament

All the favorites advanced in first-round play from the county fifth- and sixth-grade tournament Saturday at James A. Cawood Elementary School.

Abbi Fields scored 16 points as top-seeded and undefeated Cawood opened the tournament with a 32-5 win over Green Hills.

Alisha Middleton scored all five points for the Lady Falcons.

Faith Caldwell led Wallins to a 22-15 win over Rosspoint with a 14-point effort.

Faith Hoskins paced the Lady Cats with 10 points.

Carly Madden scored 15 and Ashley Preston added 10 as Evarts coasted to a 30-5 win over Cumberland.

James A. Cawood raced to a 17-0 lead on the way to a 29-5 rout of Black Mountain in the final game of the day.

Ella Karst scored 14 points to lead the Trojanettes.

Cawood will play Wallins and James A. Cawood will take on Evarts in semifinal games Tuesday, starting at 5:30 p.m. The consolation and championship games are set for Thursday.

The county seventh- and eighth-grade tournament will open Saturday at James A. Cawood Elementary School. The schedule includes: Evarts vs Green Hills, 10 a.m.; Black Mountain vs Rosspoint, 11:30 a.m.; Cawood vs Wallins, 1 p.m.; James A. Cawood vs Cumberland, 2:30 p.m.
