The Harlan County FARMERS MARKET is now open every Saturday, rain or shine, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Oct. 21. Located in the lower parking lot of the Harlan Center in downtown Harlan. The Harlan County Farmers Market is a family-orientated open air market with a “front porch” atmosphere. Not only does the market provide locally grown farm fresh produce and quality Appalachian crafts, but also traditional music and activities for the whole family.

The GET MOVING, KENTUCKY exercise program has something for everyone — you can walk, run, dance, sweep, rake, bicycle, etc. for 15-30 minutes, five times a week, with great benefits. Possibilities include lowering blood pressure, increased metabolism, reduced body fat, improved sleep patterns, increased self-esteem and confidence, and reduced or better-managed stress. Join the Bell County Cooperative Extension Service for this University of Kentucky sponsored program. The 8-week program begins Oct. 1. There is no cost, and all those who complete the program will receive a gift. Once you have registered for the program, you will receive an activity log to record you minutes on each day. Harlan County Emergency Management will be conducting TESTING of the outdoor emergency warning sirens in the Harlan and Tri-Cities area every Wednesday at noon, if no inclement weather is in the area. The Kingdom Come SWAPPIN’ MEETIN’ and Black Bear Festival will be held Oct. 6 and 7 on the Cumberland campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College.

The 43rd annual Dillion Asher REUNION will be held Oct. 6-7. The reunion will be held on Friday in the Ray Harm Room at Pine Mountain State Resort Park in Pineville with dinner from 5:30-7 p.m. in the dining room of the lodge, and a social gathering and business meeting at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the reunion will be held at Cardinal House in Queendale (close to Dillion Asher’s log cabin). There will be an all-day potluck picnic beginning at noon (bring a covered dish). Attendees are encouraged to bring old photos, albums or any information you would like to share with the genealogical family to the reunion.

There will be a FISH FRY, or barbecue sandwich meal, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 7 at Camp Blanton. Help promote the youth camp with an $8 donation.

HIGHER GROUND will present a new play, Needle Work at 2 p.m. on Oct. 7 at the Godbey Appalachian Center in Cumberland, as part of the Kingdom Swappin’ Meetin’ and Black Bear Festival.

The Bell County Chamber of Commerce will present the second annual CAR SHOW and first annual CHILI COOK OFF from 2-6 p.m. on Oct. 7 on Cumberland Avenue, 19th Street to 21st Street. Registration for the car show is from 1-4 p.m., and the entry fee is $20 (trophies given to winners). Enter your chili for the cook off for $25 (winner will receive $250). The event will also include chili tasting and judging, face painting, games and activities, raffle, live music and DJ, door prizes and more. Join the events for $10.

Pine Mountain State Resort Park will host the Frontier Night BUFFET from 5-9 p.m. on Oct. 7 featuring some of the finest elk, bison and catfish around as well as an array of other favorites. The cost is $27, adults; $11, kids 12 and under. For more information, call 606-337-3066.

Pine Mountain State Resort Park will host “A Flutter in the Night” at 8 p.m. on Oct. 14. Park naturalist and master falconer Mitch Whitaker will present an evening program involving BATS AND OWLS. After the two part event (complete with live owls during the presentation) participants will embark on an evening stroll searching for both creatures. The Cumberland Gap Artists Co-op will present the HARVEST MOON GALA from 4-9 p.m. on Oct. 14 on Colwyn Avenue in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee featuring local art and crafts, live music, good food, wine tasting and Christmas and fall bazaar tents.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October), the Harlan ARH Hospital Radiology Department and Maxine Hunter will honor cancer survivors, patients and families. A reception will be held from 2-3:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 in the radiology department.

The pantry, located at 111 Union Street in Clutts, will be signing up former and new clients for the pantry (not commodities) program from 10-11 a.m. on the first four Tuesdays and first three Wednesdays of each month until further notice. The American RED CROSS is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
