The Evarts City Council met in regular session on Tuesday, discussing a range of topics including changing television providers in the city and Commonwealth’s Attorney Parker Boggs’ community service project.

Mayor Eddie Manning brought up switching cable providers toward the end of the meeting.

“You guys know that Evarts T.V. sold out to Harlan Community Cable,” Manning said. “We have got to sign some papers to allow them rights of way for their lines here in the city.”

Manning explained if the council agrees a special-called meeting will be required.

“We’ll have to come back next Wednesday if you all agree to let me sign this agreement,” Manning said. “We basically have to get this done…before they can provide television to the community.”

Manning explained the process must be completed by Oct. 1 in order for television service to continue uninterrupted.

The council also discussed the city’s possible participation in the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Community Service project.

“They’re working on a program for people on probation to do community service,” Manning said. “We’re talking to them about that because we’ve got some projects here in the city. We’ve already talked to them about painting the slab and getting it ready for our veteran’s wall.”

Manning pointed out the city of Benham is already using the program.

“To my understanding, they pay for the materials too,” Manning said. “We’ve been a little shorthanded…that might be a good program for us. It seems to be working will up in the Benham area.”

In other council activity:

• Evarts City Police Chief Lupe Blas reported his department made one drug related arrest, two theft related arrests, answered 38 complaints, performed three assists and served two e-warrants;

• The financial report for August was accepted;

• The council approved the minutes of the August regular meeting and a special called meeting.
