The Yocum Creek Station 2 Fire Station will be dedicated on Sept. 16. The public is invited to attend the grand-reopening from 4-6 p.m. at the fire station, located at 64 School House Road in Evarts (Verda community).

Evarts Congregational United Methodist Church will host a RUMMAGE sale beginning at 9 a.m. on Sept. 16.

The Smith School REUNION will begin at noon on Sept. 16 at Martins Fork Lake, at the top shelter picnic area. Bring folding chairs, a covered dish and a soft drink.

The Harlan County FARMERS MARKET is now open every Saturday, rain or shine, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Oct. 21. Located in the lower parking lot of the Harlan Center in downtown Harlan. The Harlan County Farmers Market is a family-orientated open air market with a “front porch” atmosphere. Not only does the market provide locally grown farm fresh produce and quality Appalachian crafts, but also traditional music and activities for the whole family.

Harlan County Emergency Management will be conducting TESTING of the outdoor emergency warning sirens in the Harlan and Tri-Cities area every Wednesday at noon, if no inclement weather is in the area. The GET MOVING, KENTUCKY exercise program has something for everyone — you can walk, run, dance, sweep, rake, bicycle, etc. for 15-30 minutes, five times a week, with great benefits. Possibilities include lowering blood pressure, increased metabolism, reduced body fat, improved sleep patterns, increased self-esteem and confidence, and reduced or better-managed stress. The 43rd annual Dillion Asher REUNION will be held Oct. 6-7. The reunion will be held on Friday in the Ray Harm Room at Pine Mountain State Resort Park in Pineville with dinner from 5:30-7 p.m. in the dining room of the lodge, and a social gathering and business meeting at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the reunion will be held at Cardinal House in Queendale (close to Dillion Asher’s log cabin). There will be an all-day potluck picnic beginning at noon (bring a covered dish). Attendees are encouraged to bring old photos, albums or any information you would like to share with the genealogical family to the reunion.

The American RED CROSS is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
